WHO PUT THE HOLE IN THE DONUT?
Donut are the quintessential US snack. No hole. No donut. People have been frying dough since ancient times, but the invention of the hole is credited to a sailor from Maine, USA. Interviewed by "The Boston Post" in 1916, Hanson Gregory, then 85, explained the whole story. He was aged 16 and travelling on one of his family's trading ships when he had his brilliant idea. Cooking in the ship's kitchen he decided to cut out the middle of one of his mum's rounds of raw dough so it would cook more evenly. The story spread, and Gregory became a star!!
